The town of Motherwell was built on the steel and coal industries. Its roots can be traced back to Roman times, however, when the main Roman road through Central Scotland ran close to the area. A fort and bath house were built in what is now the north west side of the town – these Roman remains can still be seen in the nearby Strathclyde Country Park.
The town takes its name from an ancient well, the Mother’s Well, which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
