Location
Our High Street funeral home in Prestonpans
When we lose a loved one, the first call is often the hardest one to make. Our Prestonpans funeral home is on the High Street, next door to our Scotmid food store, and there is always someone here to answer the phone. Call us on 01875 813309, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
We are the East Lothian home of Scotmid Funerals, caring for families along the coast and inland: Prestonpans, Cockenzie, Port Seton, Longniddry, Musselburgh, Wallyford, Tranent, Macmerry and Elphinstone, whether you need us today or you are planning ahead for the future.
Our office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm for appointments, and we are always happy to visit you at home instead if that would be easier. There is parking available next to the office.
The funeral services we offer in Prestonpans
Every funeral we arrange from Prestonpans is different, because every family is. These are the main choices families make with us:
- Cremation funerals: a full service at a church, chapel or crematorium, followed by the committal. Most families we care for choose Seafield Crematorium.
- Burial funerals: a service followed by burial in a local cemetery. We can help you buy a new lair or arrange interment in an existing family lair.
- Direct cremation: an unattended cremation with no service, from £1,449. Many families then hold their own memorial gathering later, in their own time.
- Simple funeral: everything you need for a dignified service and nothing you do not, from £2,199.
- Children’s funerals: we make no charge for our services when a child is lost, and crematorium and burial fees for children are met by the Scottish Government.
- Pre-paid funeral plans: arrange and pay for your own funeral now, at today’s prices.
Whatever you choose, our Prestonpans team handles the paperwork, liaises with the crematorium, cemetery, doctors and Registrar, brings your loved one into our care at any hour, and stays with you from the first phone call to the day itself.

Third party costs such as flowers, a particular coffin, extra cars or newspaper notices vary with what you choose, and we will always tell you what something costs before you commit to it. You can see the full funeral costs and price lists, including our Standardised Price List and local crematoria fees.
Worried about paying? Many families in East Lothian are eligible for the Scottish Government’s Funeral Support Payment, and we can help you apply. See support with funeral costs, or simply ask us. We would far rather have that conversation early than have you worry alone.
Pre-paid funeral plans in Prestonpans
A funeral plan lets you decide what you want, pay at today’s prices, and spare your family both the cost and the guesswork. We offer four:
| Plan | Single payment | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Plan | £1,585 | An unattended cremation, with the family holding their own gathering |
| Simple Plan | £3,570 | A straightforward cremation service with a contribution to third party costs |
| Timeless Plan | £3,999 | A traditional funeral with a hearse and one limousine |
| Signature Plan | £4,375 | A full traditional funeral with two limousines and a guaranteed cremation contribution |
Plans can be paid in full, or spread over 5 or 10 years. You can compare all four plans side by side, or come in and talk it through with the Prestonpans team. There is never any pressure to buy on the day.
Crematoria and cemeteries we serve from Prestonpans
We arrange funerals at every local crematorium and cemetery. From Prestonpans, the ones families choose most often are:
Crematoria: Seafield Crematorium, Mortonhall Crematorium and Warriston Crematorium. You can find contact details for all the crematoria we work with on our local crematoriums page.
Cemeteries: Prestonpans Cemetery, Tranent Cemetery and Inveresk Cemetery in Musselburgh, among others. If you have a family lair elsewhere we will arrange the funeral there. Distance is not a problem.
Looking for details of a funeral taking place soon? Our funeral notices page lists upcoming and recent services, with online tributes and donation links.
Personalising the funeral
The details are what make a funeral feel like the person it is for. Our Prestonpans team can arrange:
- Coffins and caskets, from simple and sustainable to solid hardwood, with prices published
- Funeral flowers, including tributes, sprays and personalised designs from local florists
- Funeral vehicles, with hearses and limousines and alternatives available on request
- Funeral catering, with refreshments after the service at a venue near you
- Headstones and memorials, including lettering, new memorials and restoration
- Ashes, urns, caskets and keepsakes, including jewellery for family members
- Online obituary service, a lasting tribute page that family and friends anywhere can add to
We can also help with music, orders of service, newspaper notices, a piper, or anything else you have in mind. If you are not sure what is possible, ask. The answer is usually yes.
Why families in Prestonpans choose us
Scotmid Funerals is a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) and is recommended by The Good Funeral Guide, an independent resource for funeral advice. As a co-operative we are owned by our members, not by shareholders, which is why our prices are published and our children’s funerals are free.
The Team

Danielle Coyle
Funeral Director
Working within the funeral industry is something I have always wanted to do. Therefore I feel extremely privileged to be allowed to help and guide families through a very traumatic time in their lives.
Before joining the Scotmid team I was a self-employed dog groomer. Previous to that I worked in hospitality and catering, I enjoyed working in that industry as it allowed me to offer high-quality customer service and I was able to progress and learn new skills.
I am originally from Tranent but now live in Musselburgh with my partner Angus and our Yorkshire Terrier Ruby. In my spare time, I enjoy socialising with friends, walking and camping whenever I can.
Chris Armstrong
Funeral Manager
I began working with Scotmid in 2000 as a Funeral Operative and progressed to Funeral Director, Senior Funeral Director and to my current role of Funeral Manager. I started at Fountainbridge then our main office and am now based at Angle Park.
Born and bred in Edinburgh I previously worked for The Department of Work and Pensions until I found my real passion in the Funeral Industry. I have never looked back and believe I am very lucky to hold such an important role in the local community. I find my role extremely rewarding when assisting families in their time of need.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do first when someone dies in Prestonpans?
Call us on 01875 813309 at any hour. We will bring your loved one into our care and talk you through the next steps, including registering the death. In Scotland a death must be registered within 8 days, and you can do this at any registration office in the country. You do not have to use the one nearest to where the person died.
Are you really available 24 hours a day?
Yes. Our High Street office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, but the telephone is answered by our own people around the clock, every day of the year, including Christmas and New Year.
How much does a funeral cost in Prestonpans?
A typical cremation funeral costs £4,374 in total and a typical burial £4,724. A simple funeral is £2,199 and a direct cremation £1,449. We make no charge for children’s funerals. Our full price lists are on our funeral costs page.
Which crematorium would we use?
Most families we look after from Prestonpans choose Seafield Crematorium, but we arrange funerals at Mortonhall, Warriston and every other crematorium in the area and further afield. If you have no preference we are happy to recommend one.
Do you look after families in Musselburgh and Tranent?
Yes. Prestonpans is our East Lothian funeral home and we care for families right across the county, including Musselburgh, Wallyford, Tranent, Cockenzie, Port Seton, Longniddry, Macmerry and Elphinstone.
Can I arrange a funeral without coming into the office?
Yes. We can make all the arrangements by telephone, or visit you at home, whichever is easier for you. Many families find a home visit less daunting.
Do you offer help if we cannot afford the funeral?
Yes. We will always work to a budget you set, and we can help you apply for the Scottish Government’s Funeral Support Payment if you receive certain benefits. Please tell us early. There is more we can do at the start than at the end.
