What To Do Immediately When Someone Dies

Someone Has Died. What Now?

What do when someone dies varies depending on where and how they died.

Have they died at home?

If they’ve died at home, you should contact their family doctor or GP as soon as possible. They’ll come to your home, verify the death and, if possible, establish a cause of death. They’ll also issue a Medical Cause of Death Certificate and send the form electronically to the Registrar – although they may not be able to this right away – that will let you officially register the death.

Once the death has been verified, you can contact us and we’ll arrange to bring the person who has died into our care. You can do that at anytime day or night by calling 0800 996 1927.
We’ll send one of our specialised private ambulances, and a professional funeral team to your home. They’ll ensure everything is taken care of in a dignified manner, and answer any initial questions you may have. They’ll also leave you with details of our funeral arrangement services and tell you where your loved one will be looked after whilst in our care.

This can be a really difficult time, so we recommend you reach out to family members or friends who can support you if possible and as soon as you can.

Have they died in a hospital or a care home?

The sister in charge at the hospital will normally deal with everything. Things like having a GP attend, the death verified, and making sure the necessary certificates are issued and sent to the correct places.

They may even, on occasion, contact us on your behalf and with your permission. This is rare though, and they’ll usually leave you to make contact and let us know that someone had died. We can then make the arrangements directly with the hospital to bring the deceased into our care.

A care or nursing home will ask you which funeral directors you want to use. They’ll then contact us and arrange a time for us to attend to bring your loved one into our care. We’ll then get in touch you to start making the arrangements for the funeral.

You can find more information about dealing with the formalities to come later, things like registering the death and who to notify, by clicking the button below.

Don't just take our word for it

We’re proud of both the service we provide and what our clients say about it, and us. Many
of them even choose to leave 5 star reviews on our website once they’ve dealt with us,
which is incredibly generous given what they’ve recently went through.
