Helping Samaritans to be there when it matters.
We are delighted to announce that our charity partner for 2017/18 is Samaritans.
Samaritans has been at the heart of communities’ right across the UK since 1953.Its Edinburgh branch opened in 1959 and there are now 19 branches in Scotland, from Shetland to Selkirk. Volunteers responded to more than 300,000 calls, texts, emails and face-to-face contacts in its branches in Scotland in the last year alone.
The need for Samaritans’ safe, confidential, anonymous service has never been greater: every 6 seconds someone gets in touch for support. Across the UK and Ireland, Samaritans responds to more than 5.7 million calls for help a year.
The Scotmid family is aiming to raise £300,000 across the year, which will support Samaritans to provide a safe place for anyone to talk, at any time, in their own way about whatever’s getting to them. You don’t have to be suicidal. The funds raised will help Samaritans to answer 60,000 calls and train and support their volunteers to ensure that they can listen to anyone who needs them whatever the time of day.
The death of a loved one is a difficult time, even if it was expected, and anyone can feel overwhelmed. If you are struggling and need someone to talk to, you can contact Samaritans for free from any phone on 116 123. The number won’t show up on your phone bill.
